Student Committees
At Dunamase College there are various committees that students can join.
Green Schools Committee
Dunamase College has a very active and vibrant Green Schools Committee. It is made up of members from across all year groups. It has given the students an opportunity to take ownership of environmental issues that are important to them and create a positive change in both the school and local community.
Ethos Committee
The Ethos Committee was set up to embrace the core values of ETBI and LOETB: Excellence in Education, Care, Community, Equality and Respect. The committee is a dedicated group of students who organise a variety of events throughout the year to bring the school community together. Its aim is also to ensure the school community know and live the ethos of school every day.
Amber Flag Committee
Dunamase College’s Amber Flag Committee is well established in the school. The Committee is student led and they promote mental health awarenesss in the school community. Membership of the committee not only benefits the entire school community, it teaches valuable organisational, communication and leadership skills for every individual involved. The committee were successful in receiving the school’s Amber Flag in 2022 in recognition of their hard work.
Learner Leaders
Learner Leaders is a student-driven programme that combines learning and leadership, giving students a central role. We believe that involving students in decisions that affect them is crucial since they are at the heart of our educational efforts. The goal of the Learning Hub is to have students actively contribute to teaching and learning in Dunamase College. Here, they help their peers with their studies and at the same time develop important teamwork skills essential in today’s workplaces. Activities include mentoring fellow students in study techniques, sharing exam tips, and running campaigns to improve attendance. Through Learner Leaders, our students improve academically and prepare for success in their future careers.
School of Belonging
Our School of Belonging Committee was set up in 2023. It began on the back of an initiative led by local educators to build a Community of Belonging in Portlaoise. Dunamase College is delighted to be a part of this wonderful initiative to help support students in the transition through the levels of education and to promote a sense of belonging in our school and our local community that ensures that cultural diversity is a benefit to all.
School of Sanctuary
In a momentous occasion for Dunamase College, the school has been recognised as a Champion School of Sanctuary by School of Sanctuary Ireland. This prestigious honour marks Dunamase College as the first school in Laois to receive such an accolade, highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for all.
The celebration took place on Wednesday, December 13th, when the School of Sanctuary Ireland monitoring team visited Dunamase College to witness firsthand the remarkable efforts made by the students and staff to foster inclusivity. The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Deputy Principal Claire Fitzgerald, setting the tone for a day filled with inspiring presentations from our Le Chéile committee.
