Student Council
The Student Council is a student-led body that engages with students, teachers, school management and parents. We understand the importance of the student voice and support the Student Council to actively encourage student feedback through various initiatives. Keep an eye on our social media for all of our activities throughout the year.
What is the Student Council?
- A representative structure.
- Students in a post-primary school can become involved in the affairs of the school.
- Work in partnership with school management, staff and parents.
- To benefit the school and its students.
- It is recommended in the Education Act (1998) that all schools have a Student Council.
The main role of a Student Council, as set out in the Education Act, is “to promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school, in co-operation with the board, parents and teachers”.
The objectives of the Student Council are:
- to represent the student voice on matters of general concern to students in Dunamase College.
- to support the management and staff in the development of the school.
- to enhance communication between students, management, staff and parents.
- to promote an environment conducive to educational and personal development.
- to promote friendship and respect among students.
- to contribute to the development of school policies.
- to nurture a range of important skills among students, such as participating in meetings, negotiating, responsible leadership and collaborative problem solving.
- to develop leadership and organisational skills through the research, planning, organisation and implementation of a whole school project to be decided upon by each individual student council at the beginning of each year.
Once the council is formed, the Student Council Executive will be elected. This consists of:
